Just ordered your books looking forward to some horsey reading time! I don't get much horsey riding time , with a 21 month old daughter and 8 year old step daughter. Sometimes I get REALLY down because it is true, Sometimes a woman needs a horse! But i know this season in life will pass. My toddler already seems to love horses also so I am hopefull it will last and once she is old enough we can share the love(the need) of riding!God Bless,Amy

I ran across you accidentally because of your post about Traveller on FB. I'm so sorry for your loss, but so glad it brought me to your site. At 52 I just got my first horse which is a life long dream. I'm thoroughly enjoying everything about riding and having my Charlie. In a few months time it's amazing the bond we already have and I can only imagine your deep sense of loss. I read your article "If You Couldn't Ride" and look forward to reading more of your work.

I read your lovely article in Going Gaited. You feel as I do. I have an older horse that I got in 2007 when she already at least 15. I've had many issues that would make other people get rid of their animals. Keeley is family. I live in Kentucky where horses are so common that people take them for granted. There are many starved and abused horses here in the God's country of horses. Not me- I wanted a horse from the time I was a little girl and I would never turn her over to anyone else.Thank you for caring and I cannot wait to read your books!

Betsy, your column "If you couldn't Ride" really hit home. It put a lump in my throat & tears in my eyes! I too have and have had some very special horses in my life. People think we are crazy feeding & caring for horses that are no longer servicable. I have myself taken in several non-ridable horses in the past and allowed them to live their remaining years with pasturemates and lots of love & affection from us.

I currently have a 33yr old gaited pony (Goldie) who has owned me for the last 10yrs. A 27yr old TWH gelding (Digger) and my 24 yr old TWH gelding (Renegade)

"Renegade" has been the most special friend I have ever had. He has a huge personality and an ego the size of Texas!
He has been my show horse (many blues) parade horse, and trail partner until he began falling with me & we found out he has bad knees. I have never met horse so adept at communicating to me with body language and I learned the hard way to listen to him the first time. There is no way I could not keep him with me. He has given me 10 wonderful years and although he gets jealous and doesn't understand why mom doesn't ride him, we go for walks and he gets special time with me.

No, we can't just toss them away after they have given us so many good years. Thank you for this wonderful column.

Renee

Very inspiring article about taking care of our aged horses that are no longer ridable. As my rescue saddlebred mare approaches 30, I too, have retired her, but was lightly riding her earlier this year. Your article about Traveler really touched me and, like your relationship with him, my mare always took care of me like no other horse. I trusted her through thick and thin, and even trained her to be a mounted police horse where we volunteered with the local county. From the Traveler story, I linked to your home page and really like how you intertwine God into your (and our) daily lives. May the Lord bless you. Stepanie

I love your website and also how you have seen your faith in your horses. I have had some of the same experiences and feel the same about my horses. I have 2 mares and a gelding. The mares are as different from each other as night and day, but I wouldn't want them any other way. thank you so much for sharing it is so refreshing.

I was delighted to find your website. I am still newer to the internet. I am also newer to horses. I have alays been fascinated with them, but never had lessons which I started a little over a year ago at 52. I started with lessons at a large barn with mostly youngsters and teen-agers. I took private lessons, I didn't care how awkard I looked. Since I have found a wonderful place for private lessons with a mature experienced trainer an hour away in Marengo at Golden Gait stables. She teaches how to ride using feel, how to tack properly and more about behavior. I can't read enough about them. The more I'm around them the more I want to be around them. At times I wonder if God would want me to spend time and money with more worthy pursuit. It seems though the time I spend riding I become more relaxed as if the horse is ministering me. My dream horse was alays a pretty little bay mare. But lately I have fallen in love with a large spotted 15h 3 Missouri foxtrotting gelding. I wish he could be mine at boarding facility I could afford closer to my home. Please pray for me maybe God is using this horse for me. God bless you all Claire a nurse from Mchenry who loves horses

I was so excited to see another "Kelleher" out there that loves horses as much as I do. And, of course, the love of God as well!

My husband, Michael D. Kelleher, was from Ohio. His family was the Timothy Kellehers from County Cork if Ireland.
